Will Your Sofa Fit Through the Door?
Checking whether a sofa fits in your room and checking whether it can be delivered there are two completely different problems. The Will It Fit? Home calculator answers the first one. This guide is for the second — everything the piece has to pass through before it ever reaches the spot you measured.
There's no single formula that settles this for an irregular, upholstered piece of furniture. What follows is the information to gather and the order to check it in — not a pass/fail test you can run from two numbers.
A. Find out what actually arrives
Before you measure a single doorway, find out what you're actually moving. Ask the retailer or check the product page for:
- How many packages or modules it ships as — a sofa delivered in several boxes is a completely different delivery problem than one arriving as a single assembled piece.
- Each package's own dimensions — not the assembled product's dimensions.
- The largest single non-removable component — for a sectional or modular piece, this is usually the number that actually matters, not the overall assembled size.
- Whether legs, arms, backs, leaves, bases, or chaise modules can be removed — removing a few parts can shave critical inches off whatever the tightest point turns out to be.
- Whether delivery packaging can be removed before the tightest point on the route, if space allows for unboxing partway.
- Whether professional assembly happens inside the destination room — if so, the components travel the route unassembled, and it's the components' dimensions that matter for the route, not the finished piece's.
B. Measure the complete route
Once you know what's actually being carried in, measure every point it has to pass, in order:
- Clear opening width at every doorway, with the door fully open — not the frame-to-frame trim measurement.
- Clear opening height at every doorway.
- Door thickness, stops, handles, closers, and thresholds — hardware that protrudes into the opening reduces the usable width below the nominal doorway size.
- Vestibules and consecutive doors — two doors close together can leave less turning room between them than either doorway has on its own.
- Hallway width at its narrowest point — thermostats, light switches, and radiators can all narrow a hallway below its nominal width.
- Corner and turning space — a hallway can be wide enough on the straight but too tight to turn a large piece through a corner.
- Stair width, measured at the narrowest gap between the wall and the railing.
- Landings — where stairs turn, there needs to be room to pivot the piece, not just clear width on the straight runs.
- Handrails — often the actual obstruction on a stairway, not the wall-to-wall width.
- Sloped ceilings — a stairwell with a low, angled ceiling can block a tall piece even when the floor-level width is fine.
- Elevator door and cabin dimensions, if applicable — elevators are frequently the tightest point of all in an apartment building, tighter than any doorway.
- The destination room's own doorway — easy to forget once you've cleared the building's entrance.
- Fixed obstructions — built-in shelving, radiators, low light fixtures, anything permanently mounted along the route.
For reference, common North American residential figures (always measure your own, since older buildings vary): interior doors are commonly a 32 in (81 cm) clear opening under current building code, with many existing homes — especially older ones — still at 28–30 in; front/exterior doors are commonly 36 in (91 cm); door height is almost always around 80 in (203 cm).
C. Compare orientations carefully
A rectangular package doesn't always have to pass through a doorway flat and square to it — tilting or turning it can sometimes let a package clear an opening narrower than its longest edge. But width and height constraints interact with each other and with the depth of the opening (door thickness, wall thickness, consecutive doors), and an upholstered, irregularly-shaped piece doesn't behave like a rigid rectangular box.
There is no universal single-number formula that guarantees an irregular upholstered item can turn through a real delivery route. When the clearance looks close on paper, that's exactly when it's worth asking the retailer, the manufacturer, the delivery company, or an experienced mover to weigh in before you commit to a purchase — they've moved that exact model, or ones like it, through real doorways before.
D. What your own measurements can tell you
Once you've gathered the package/component dimensions and measured the full route, you're generally looking at one of three outcomes:
- Clearly enough clearance — every dimension at every point on the route comfortably exceeds the largest component in every orientation you'd realistically use. Low risk.
- Close or uncertain — clearance is tight at one or more points, or you're not confident about an orientation working in practice. This is the case to confirm professionally before ordering, not to guess through.
- Clearly too large in every permitted orientation — the piece won't make it as a single assembled unit, full stop.
None of these is a guarantee — they're a read on your own measurements, not a certified result.
If it's genuinely too large as one piece
- Ask if it's modular. A modular sectional (see our sectional shapes guide) can often be broken into individual pieces and carried in separately, even when the assembled sofa never could have made the trip in one piece.
- Ask the retailer about disassembly. Many sofas have removable legs or a detachable back that reduce the effective size of the largest piece being carried.
- Ask about window/balcony delivery. Movers in apartments routinely bring oversized pieces up and through a window or balcony by crane or hoist when the stairwell can't take them — worth a quick call to the retailer or a moving company before ruling a sofa out entirely.
