How Much Space Between a Sofa and Coffee Table?
This is a different question from the walkway clearance Will It Fit? Home calculates in front of a sofa. Walkway clearance is about passing through a space; sofa-to-coffee-table clearance is about the legroom you have while sitting down — close enough to reach your coffee, far enough to stand up without kicking the table.
The standard range: 14–18 inches (35–45 cm)
Most interior designers treat 18 in (45 cm) as the everyday target — enough legroom to get up comfortably while still close enough to reach a drink or a plate without leaning far forward. The full comfortable range is commonly given as 14–18 in.
- 12 in (30 cm) — the practical minimum. Workable in a tight room, but expect to swing your legs out to stand rather than rising straight up.
- 14–18 in (35–45 cm) — the standard comfortable range for most sofas.
- 20–24 in (50–60 cm) — worth the extra room for a deep, plush sofa or sectional, since you sit further back and need more room to get your legs clear.
Don't forget the far side
The gap on the far side of the coffee table — between it and a TV stand, media console, or the chairs across from it — matters just as much and is easy to overlook. A commonly cited target is 30–36 in (75–90 cm) of clear walkway on that side, enough for someone to pass through comfortably even with the table in the room.
Why the room planner doesn't calculate this directly
A coffee table can be added to the room planner's sketch as a visual decor item, but it's placed for reference only — it isn't part of the sofa's pass/fail verdict the way walkway clearance is, since a coffee table's position is entirely up to you and isn't a fixed product dimension the way a sofa's footprint is. Use the ranges on this page as your own rule of thumb once you've placed one: drag it to roughly 14–18 in off the front of the sofa in the sketch and you'll be in the standard comfortable zone.
