Standard Sofa Sizes: Loveseat, Sofa & Sectional Dimensions

If you haven't picked a specific sofa yet, it helps to know the typical size range for the category you're considering before you start browsing. These are common industry ranges, not a single fixed number — always check a specific product's own listing (or our verified catalogue) before buying.

Loveseat

Width48–72 in (122–183 cm) — most commonly 52–60 in (132–152 cm)
Depth30–40 in (76–102 cm)
Height30–40 in (76–102 cm)

A loveseat is essentially a 2-seat sofa. "Compact" loveseats run toward the bottom of the width range (48–54 in); oversized versions with deep seats can stretch to 72 in, overlapping with small standard sofas.

Standard sofa (3-seat)

Width72–96 in (183–244 cm)
Depth32–40 in (81–102 cm)
Height28–32 in (71–81 cm)

This is the widest category — everything from a snug apartment-size 3-seat sofa around 72–78 in to a large, deep-seated sofa near 96 in. Our own catalogue spans a good chunk of this range; see the sofa catalogue for real, verified examples at each size.

L-shape sectional

Each side95–130 in (241–330 cm)
Depth per side36–40 in (91–102 cm)

Seats roughly four to six people. See our sectional shapes guide for how an L-shape's footprint is actually measured (it's not simply "width × depth" the way a straight sofa is).

U-shape sectional

End to end120–160 in (305–406 cm), often more

Seats six to ten or more. This is a large piece of furniture — worth double-checking both the room fit and the delivery path (see will it fit through the door?) before committing to one.

Using these ranges before you've chosen a product

Pick a width near the middle of the category that matches your room, then use the room planner's "enter my own dimensions" option to test it against your actual room before you start browsing specific listings — it'll immediately tell you if you're aiming too big for the space, before you fall for a sofa that was never going to fit.
